Understand the difference between Garmin watches, handheld GPS devices, cycling computers, golf devices and satellite communicators before choosing.

Garmin makes devices for fitness, outdoor navigation, cycling, golf, driving, marine use and communication beyond normal mobile coverage. That range is useful, but it also means two products carrying the same brand can be designed for completely different jobs.

The quickest way to narrow the choice is to begin with your main activity. Then compare the features that matter inside that product category rather than comparing every Garmin device against every other one.

Start with the device category

Fitness and multisport watches

A fitness or multisport watch is designed to stay with you throughout training and everyday activity. Depending on the model, it may support activity profiles, health metrics, route guidance, mapping, music, contactless payments or connected notifications.

Choose based on the sports you actually do, the level of navigation you need and how much battery life you expect between charges. A runner who wants straightforward training data may not need the mapping and outdoor features valued by a long-distance hiker.

Outdoor handheld GPS devices

A handheld navigator is built around route finding, mapping and outdoor durability. The larger physical controls or screen can be easier to use than a watch for detailed navigation, especially when the device is mounted or used with gloves.

Check the included maps, supported map options, battery arrangement, screen visibility, mounting options and whether communication features are built in or require a separate device.

Satellite communicators

A satellite communicator is designed to send messages or access assistance where compatible satellite coverage is available and normal mobile service may not be. These products commonly require an active satellite subscription for communication features.

Confirm the current subscription options, regional coverage, activation requirements and emergency-use guidance for the exact model. A satellite communicator should support a wider safety plan rather than replace preparation, local advice or appropriate emergency equipment.

Cycling computers and radar

A cycling computer places ride data and navigation in a format designed to be read from the handlebars. Important differences include display size, navigation capability, training features, sensor compatibility and battery life.

Rear-facing radar and light products perform a different role. They can provide awareness information through a compatible display or app, depending on the model. Check device compatibility rather than assuming every accessory works with every computer or watch.

Garmin golf products include watches, handhelds, rangefinders, launch monitors and club-tracking accessories. Decide whether the priority is on-course distance information, shot tracking, practice analysis or a combination.

Automotive devices may be designed for everyday driving, motorcycles, trucks, recreational vehicles or off-road use. The correct model depends on vehicle type, route requirements, mounting and the map or traffic features available in the region.

Decide how much navigation you need

GPS recording and full navigation are not the same thing. Some devices record an activity and show basic direction information, while others provide detailed maps, route calculation or turn guidance.
